Animal Consciousness

…of your post will mark all of the ideas contained therein as problematic. I call this a ‘bulk criticism’, see #362. To protect against bulk criticism, try to submit one idea per post. You can post multiple sibling ideas (not nested ideas) by using the form where it says “Add another top-level idea to the discussion” for each one. Would…

Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?

Please don’t submit multiple criticisms in the same post. Submit one criticism per post only. Familiarize yourself with how Veritula works (#465) before you continue.

Copyright

This idea contains at least two claims and one question: Copyright stifles creativity. Fan fiction does not damage creators. “Where is copyright good?” It’s unwise to submit multiple ideas at once as they each become susceptible to ‘bulk criticism’. That can unduly weaken your own position. Try submitting the ideas again, separately.

Are we always wrong?

You make several points here. Try breaking them up into separate ideas. Otherwise, you run the risk of receiving ‘bulk’ criticisms. See #465.

Reflections on Rat Fest ’25

Popper himself, when I interviewed him in 1992, was a comically dogmatic denouncer of dogmatism. He kept insisting he was right and his critics wrong. When I told Popper a former student accused him of not tolerating criticism, he responded: “It is completely untrue! I was happy when I got criticism! Of course, not when I would answer the criticism…

“Can you live your life 100% guided by reason?”

Yeah. I mean finding unanimous consent between different kinds of ideas generally, not just between ideas about rationality. See also #3049 and #2281.

How Does Veritula Work?

Agreed, thanks. Fixed in #4095. “Since decision-making follows the same logic as truth-seeking, you can use these trees to make decisions, too.”

How rationality will help you to stand the right up, and do the thing?

If you’re asking how rationality will help you figure out the right course of action: using the process outlined in #4471.

…the core insights of Veritula is that people should not rely on memory to decide whether to adopt an idea (#4471). They shouldn’t rely on memory to recall the outcome of a discussion. They shouldn’t track the outcome of a discussion manually (unless they’ve practiced that skill extensively). They should instead feed ideas into Veritula, put them in the proper…

Rational Decision-Making It’s rational to adopt only those ideas which, as written, don’t have pending criticisms, and to reject ideas that do. If an idea, as written, has no pending criticisms, it’s rational to adopt it and irrational to reject it. What reason could you have to reject it? If it has no pending criticisms, then either no reasons to…

Phillip Ngongo’s profile

Welcome to Veritula, Phillip. I recommend reading this guide to understand how Veritula works.

Nice article on Popper and Deutsch. You attribute to Popper “the idea that truth is difficult to attain, and that we can only ever get closer to it.” You imply that we cannot fully reach truth.

Do you have some quote/citation where Popper says something to that effect?

Fallibilism vs. Cynicism

Hi Rob, welcome to Veritula. It’s nice to meet another software engineer. Be sure to read ‘How Does Veritula Work?’ and ‘How Do Bounties Work?’ to make the most of V. Re: definitions, you raise an argument others have made before, namely that language has some unavoidable ambiguity or incomplete information, which necessarily introduces error. I already addressed that argument…

Abortion

You’ve submitted several criticisms in one idea. It’s in your interest to avoid doing that because you make yourself vulnerable to what we call ‘bulk criticism’. See #4471.

I may have more criticisms but I can’t really submit them productively until you split up your idea.

Hard to Vary or Hardly Usable?

Revisions aren’t for counter-critizing criticisms. Revisions are for changes you make because you agree with a criticism. I’ve restored the original. I’ve also updated #5519 to make the purpose of revisions clearer. It’s now #5546. Please read it in its entirety before you continue working on the bounty. Then continue with #5544.

#5548·Dennis HackethalOP, about 2 months ago·Criticism

Thanks for clarifying! The updated #5546 does make it much clearer.

#5550·Jad Elmourad, about 2 months ago

@jadelmourad be sure to submit separate criticisms separately. You benefit because it means I need to address each criticism individually, not in ‘bulk’. (See #5546, keyword ‘bulk’.)
